PHYSICAL ADSORPTION AND ITS USES.
Coordinator:
Dr. José L. Vicente
This research project is aimed to the study of physical adsorption on heterogeneous surfaces. Simple gases like nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide,
sulfur dioxide and several light hydrocarbons are studied as well as more complex adsorbates like phenol. Among the solids studied in the project it
is possible to mention: graphite, carbon blacks (graphitized and non-graphitized), activated carbons, and oxides (Al, Si, Ti, Mg, etc.).
Several aspects are of interest to the project like: surface area determination, surface heterogeneity, adsorption energy distribution function,
adsorbed phase behavior in relation to surface characteristics, surface coverage and temperature. Adsorbate preferential orientations, cross-sectional
areas, and gas-solid and gas-gas interactions are also studied. The experimental results are analyzed with new models and Monte Carlo computer
simulations of the systems.
Phosphate ion sorption by soils is another research area of interest because the soil content of phosphate ions is one of the factors that limit the
production of several cultures. Phosphate adsorption from its aqueous solutions on soil samples is studied to correlate soil surface characteristics,
deduced from the physisorption of gases, with their retention capacity of phosphate ions and, at the same time, to deepen the knowledge of sorption
mechanisms and theoretical models capable of reproducing experimental results.
