LIPID PEROXIDATION OF BIOLOGICAL MEMBRANES : EFFECT OF ANTIOXIDANTS

Coordinator: Dr. Angel Catalá

Our laboratory has been interested for many years on the lipid peroxidation of biological membranes from various tissues and different species. The process of lipid peroxidation is followed by the use of modern techniques to measure light emission: chemiluminescence produced during the formation of alkoxyl radicals formed during the lipid peroxidation of long chain unsaturated fatty acids present mainly in phospholipids of biological membranes. We have tested the effect of many antioxidants such as: α-tocopherol, vitamin A, melatonin and acetyl serotonin among others. For a detailed review see (An overview of lipid peroxidation with emphasis in outer segments of photoreceptors and the chemiluminescence assay Review Angel Catalá Int J Biochem Cell Biol 2006 38: 1482-1495)
